Baby Season Hotting up at Monkey Forest

Baby season is hotting up at Trentham Monkey Forest as the first babies of the year are born.

Slightly later than usual, the 2 new arrivals were born on 27th and 30th May and they will hopefully be the first of a number of births in the coming weeks.

Birthing season runs from late spring through to early summer so the team have been eagerly awaiting the first babies of the year as summer fast approaches. As the babies are born high up in the trees at night, it isn’t until the following morning that the staff at Monkey Forest get the first peek of a new arrival. They spot a tiny bundle clinging onto its mother’s tummy – something they look out for daily during baby season.

This time last year Monkey Forest had already welcomed 6 babies to the group, making this year’s slightly later arrival highly anticipated – the little ones must have been waiting for some sunshine before making an appearance! Now 1 year old, the 4 little girls and 4 little boys born last year are very entertaining to watch as they play, climb and discover the forest.

As the weather warms up Monkey Forest is expecting more new arrivals very soon, Director Matt Lovatt commented:

Every year the arrival of babies is exciting for us here at Monkey Forest. It’s a privilege to be able to watch the intimate moments between the babies, mothers and family members during those precious first few days and weeks. Importantly, it also allows us to share the plight of the Barbary macaque with our visitors to raise awareness of their endangered status as there is only an estimated 8000 surviving in the wild.

Monkey Forest is the perfect family day out this half term, and you may even catch a glimpse of the newest monkeys in town.
