Happy 17th Birthday Monkey Forest!

Since 2005, visitors have been able to discover a fascinating yet unique species, living freely in an ancient Staffordshire Forest. Monkey Forest is home to 140 free-ranging Barbary macaques. Visitors walk along the 3/4 of a mile pathway. Walk, watch and be AMAZED as the endangered monkeys live as they would in the wild.

 

Barbary macaques are listed as endangered. The population has decreased by more than 50% in the last 30 years. There are fewer than 8000 wild Barbary macaques left.

 

Much of what is known about Barbary macaques is from research conducted in our parks. Around 80% of Barbary macaque research findings have been from studies conducted within our parks.

 

We have successfully introduced over 100 babies to the world, including SIX that have been born so far this year.

 

Our conservation aims & objectives remain deep within the heart of Trentham Monkey Forest 17 years down the line:

• Maintain a precious genetic pool

• Reintroduce to strengthen the wild population (if conditions are favourable)

• Raise Awareness & Support Conservation Projects

 

We are SO proud of what we have managed to accomplish for this fantastic species so far and hopefully, we are able to carry this work out for many years to come.
