Why are Barbary macaques endangered?
Why are Barbary macaques endangered?
The population has decreased by more than 50%in the last 40 years.
There are fewer than 8000 wild Barbary macaques left.
Deforestation
Too many trees are being cut down. Their natural habitat is being degraded through excessive logging.
Overgrazing
There is competition for food with flocks of sheep and goats. This reduces the monkey’s food resource.
The Illegal Pet Trade
Babies are poached from the wild and sold illegally as pets, mostly within Europe.
Photo Props for Tourism
Barbary macaque monkeys are commonly exploited to make money from tourists.
