Mission Statement
Monkey Forest is dedicated to the conservation of the Barbary
macaque.
We aim to raise public awareness of the plight of this endangered species, and to ensure everyone has a unique, stimulating, enjoyable, and informative visit.
Who we are
140 monkeys living in Stoke on Trent? This unique idea first started back in 1969 when our first park was opened in France. Due to the success of the park, a second park was opened in Rocamadour, also in France. Later, a third park opened in Germany in 1976.
In 2004 two groups of Barbary macaques from the existing parks were re-homed here in Trentham, and the park opened to the public in July 2005. Unfortunately, Barbary macaques are listed as endangered by the IUCN Red List due to loss of habitat and the illegal pet trade.
Trentham Monkey Forest aims to provide visitors with a unique, interesting and educational experience, whilst raising awareness and informing you of our involvement in the conservation of the endangered wild Barbary macaques, and the research we do to help protect them.
We pride ourselves on being one of the most unique days out in Staffordshire, whilst doing everything we can to help these endangered monkeys.
Research
Because the monkeys live in the woodland year-round and remain as close to wild conditions as possible, the site allows researchers to carry out groundbreaking studies. Primatologists can observe the same individuals over extended periods, making it easier to gather consistent, long-term data.
We’re proud to provide a space that offers such valuable opportunities to deepen our understanding of these remarkable primates.
Conservation
Less than 8,000 Barbary macaques remain in the wild. Our park protects them by providing them with a sanctuary here in Staffordshire. The monkeys live in relative freedom and reside in the woodland all year round. They are as close to wild monkeys as possible.
Visitors can observe the monkeys living within this natural environment, and the entire spectrum of behaviour can be observed in a rich and natural setting whilst being impeccably preserved..
